As the 2025 holiday season approaches, U.S. trucking companies are preparing for a sharp rise in freight volumes. Retailers, e-commerce platforms, and manufacturers are increasing shipments ahead of Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Christmas.

Analysts predict demand will grow by 15–20% compared to the summer months. The biggest pressure will be on refrigerated trailers and dry vans, carrying food, electronics, and holiday goods.

Large carriers are hiring temporary drivers and leasing extra trailers, while small fleets face challenges due to limited capacity and the ongoing driver shortage. Rising diesel prices also put pressure on profit margins. Many carriers add fuel surcharges, but independent owner-operators often bear the cost themselves.

Technology helps meet demand. Digital dispatching, load boards, and telematics improve efficiency and reduce empty miles. Some fleets are testing electric trucks for short urban routes, though diesel remains dominant in long-haul operations.

Experts advise shippers to book early, as last-minute loads will likely cost more and face delays on busy lanes such as Los Angeles–Chicago and Dallas–Atlanta.

Despite the challenges, many carriers see the holiday surge as an opportunity to recover from slower months and strengthen long-term contracts.
